I noticed that the some people use crosswinds as their website provider and I signed up because I saw the ahort address and later found that they provided unlimited space! So, I signed up and got to the file manipulation section. But, where do I go from there to make the address so short? I know if I make a file it will make the extension something like this: www.crosswinds.net/~gaurdianangel/file.html How do I just make it: www.crosswinds.net/~gaurdianangel Someone please help me, please.

I don''t know crosswinds myself, but I know xoom and geocities. You HAVE to make an index.htm or index.html file. Try it.

Well Caeser Studios did it that way, but I don't have the address of hand. Although, I do know a site that is the way I want it.

www.crosswinds.net/~hanshalfwitten

I can't ask him though, I made him mad a while back.

Yes, how it works with all web providers I''ve seen (or it could be a function of the browser, I don''t know) is that you put a file index.html in the root directory of your site. Then, you can just type the directory name, and the browser will open index.html.

As others have said, just make your ''main'' page index.html (or.htm) and then you can give just the root directory, like www.llamasoft.net (hah! what a plug)

Yep, that''s correct... The file you want surfers to see when they surf to www.crosswinds.net/~gaurdianangel (for example) must be called ''index.htm'' or ''index.html'' (that applies to almost all website providers).

It''s a server configuration thing. Most (if not all) servers will allow the operator to configure a default page title to show when no page is specified. It just happens that index.htm/index.html have become the standard. This is why hosts like geocities and xoom require it. They could just as easily have configured it to be anything else (default.html, home.asp... whatever).
