would it all run at the same speed in perspective?... or is this an embarrisingly stupid question?

Well, the thing is very simple: if you consider the speed of a single primitive, then you are measuring the fillrate used to render it. The fillrate (ie. the rasterizer fragment pipeline) does not care abnout perspectives, coordinate values, etc. All that has already been processed and discarded and this point in the pipeline. All what matters, is the size of the projected polygon on the screen, counted in pixels. Simply said: the larger the polygon appears on the screen (after projection), the longer it will take to render.
