I have an idea for an occulision method that i dont know if it has been done before it goes like this: You use the opengl stencil to cast a volume in the same proportions as the camera clip planes, then whatever is hit by the stencil is drawn, everything else is culled off. think it will work? has this been done before? any info would be great.

While that idea may work, it is not really the right way to go abut occlusion culling with todays graphics cards. In your case all the geometry has to be sent to the card to check if it should be drawn or not. The best occlusion culling is where something that is hidden is never sent to the card. Bounding box checks against the view frustum will start you off in the right direction, more complex methodes use bsps, quad and oct-trees.

No because the Stencil buffer works on PIXELS not space so if you do that then everything will still be drawn the same and if you cover half the screen then only half the screen will be drawn on, the stencil buffer is not to be used for OCCLUSION.
