Hi there, I''m trying to convert .3ds to .x with conv3ds and it works proper with a file of 1000 polys. But if I try the same with an object of 9000 the converter shows me a cpp-error and mesh-viewer can''t display this .x I''m wondering if it''s to large for the app? Am I right? Anyone got the same experience? Thank you, Python PS: Please do not mention that x-files are lame, 3ds-loader will come, but first I''d like to make same poly-tests with .x

i''ve never had much success with conv3ds other than with simple models. you might want to try Deep Exploration at http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/index.htm . i converted a 3ds model with 160,000 faces to .x using DE without a problem. it''s expensive but there''s a time-limited fully functional demo version available.

I''ve noticed the same thing whenever I try to export and object from 3ds max with more than 10,000 polys. 3ds max just locks up and won''t do anything. Under 10,000, my 3d exporters work great. By the way, I''m using the Panda .X file exporter and sometimes the generic Microsoft DirectX exporter. I''ll have to try Deep Exploration sometime.

Why are .x files lame?

(this is a serious question)

and what file format should be used otherwise(ie: preferable format for skinned mesh type models)?

Hi!

I don''t said they ARE lame, I just wanted to prevent all that "Hey .x is lame!"-postings ;-)

Well, I still don''t know which format is the best for me. That will be the major task for the next weeks.
