2D collision Detection

I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out how to do 2D collision detection for a project i am working on in my graphics class. I would like to find some literature online or in a book which could explain a good process to do the type of collision in 2D games like DX-Ball, Arkanon, pong etc. I am very new at grahics programing and sorta new at porgraming, so any help at all would be great. Thanks Collisionless
