The DirectX SDK help has some directions on how to setup VC++ with DirectX. I can''t remember the exact topic name. Something like "Compiling with DirectX" I think?

Yes, lpDirectDraw is a variable. If you''re reading that in some of the SDK code or examples, then it is a pointer to a DirectDraw7 interface.

Initializing DirectX does all kinds of things. It sets up the video mode and cooperative levels, along with a lot of behind the scenes things that you don''t have to worry too much about.

I hope that helps you a little. Keep reading the SDK and maybe get a book about DirectX and you''ll learn lots of things. If you''re looking for a book, I''d suggest "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" by Andre LaMothe.

Anyway, good luck!

I would recommend buying Windows Game Programming for Dummies. It is written my lamothe and he does an excellent job of walking you through step by step. It uses Direct X.
