i have a question.does the ai have to be in the same engine as the 3d game engine.

What do you mean by that? "Engine" is a very nebulous term. You could say that AI is in a separate "engine" from the 3D graphics. Or not. Whatever floats your boat. ^_^

It would probably make development easier in the long run if you kept those two functions separate, in the their own modules (or files, engines, or whatever you call them).
