3dsMax -> Skinned Mesh

How do I export a mesh with a skeleton from 3dsMax? Whenever I try, the bone objects show up in the .x file but they have no effect on the model. If I try to collapse the "skin" modifier, the mesh is no longer affected by the bones in 3dsMax. Has anyone run into this problem? Thanks
