A good book?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I was just wondering what a good book would be(in your opinion) for networking and multiplayer. B/c I want my game to be able to be played over the net like battle.net, Thanks, Demon Realms!!!!!!

I don''t know of any books covering multiplayer coding, but as for the networking (and network programming) I would recommend "Linux Socket Programming" by Sean Walton. It covers all the aspects of programming applications for the Internet. And don''t let the name of the book confuse you. The knowledge you get from that book is also applicable under Windows (Winsock is built on top of the BSDsockets which are used in Linux). You will learn some advanced topics also, and it could be useful when coding heavy game applications.
Hope that helps.

There is a book more specific to winsock called "Network Programing for Microsoft Windoes" I ordered it an just got it in the mail yesterday. From what ive read so far I do like. Socket programing for windows and linux based systems are a lot alike, but winsock does have some special features you can take advantage of. If you are using windows this book may be better. If you do go with a unix/linux socket programing book check out beej''s tutorial(I think thats what its called). It covers what you have to add into linux socket programing for it to work on windows. I think id you do linux socket programing it is the same as using winsock 1.1 so you wouldnt be able to take advantage of winsock 2.* libraries. I think they have some bug fixes in them.

I have "Multiplayer Game Programming" by Todd Barron & Andre Lamothe. Very Windows-specific and grab-by-the-hand tutorials, but a good overall start into MMORPG programming using DirectX 8.
As mentionned above, "Linux Socket Programming" by Sean Walton is a definite asset if you want portability.
