I would like to just view these models and do nothing with them. Is their any programs that are free to use to look at .max or .3ds files? Thanks

gmax should be able to,because it is based on 3dsmax...but you have to register yourself...

I''ve been happy with Quick3D. I use it only when I want to quickly view/convert outside of MAX. Check it out.
