Action Mapping: Useful or Counterproductive?

I''ve been mulling over things to work on for awhile, and I decided to revamp my input system to use more advanced features of the DirectX SDK, and of course, Action Mapping is on my list. I''m just wondering if letting the SDK choose controls based on genre and whatnot is a good idea. Does anyone have any experiences that they could share, just to give me an idea of how useful it is in application? I mean, it''s useful in theory, but things aren''t always so perfect in application as they are in theory. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance, Julian Spillane
