Hex height

What is the best way to add altitude/height to a hex map? Options: 1. Have the centre of the hex represent the height and varage out the ''sides'' to smoothly join with neighboring hexes. To stop joins, big jumps would have to be made illegal. 2. Have the corners of the hex a height. This might make calculating movement points up/down slope a little less obvious to the game player. 3. Have a 7th vertex in the centre of the hex and make this the height. 4. Have no slopes but consider each hex a vertical column like the giants causeway in northern ireland. This would look funny for my planned 3D environment. Mark

i highly suggest putting in a seventh vertex in the center of the hex. you then give it the average height of the other six vertices. this will give your hex a more planar look, which is what i am assuming the goal here is.

note: this should also be done to isometric tiles to make them look better (add a fifth vertex in the middle of the tile, set to the average height).
