My terrain doesnt appear to be lit very well (granted that my current texture is a grayscale image). I dont have any normals set on my terrain or any materials. Could it be my terrain''s lack of a material, normal, or just the world''s lighting (or all of the above)? thanks.

Umm.. i''m not familiar with DX lighting.. but i think that normals are required for any lighting system..

For sure. Without normals, the lighting routines won''t work, period (short of maybe vertex programs generating them). Calculating surface normals is easy. Hit Google up for that.
