Difference between LPDIRECTDRAWSUFACE7 and IDirectDrawSurface7 *

I have a function, Draw(), which takes in a DDraw surface as an argument in order to Blt. I was wondering if the argument should be "LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7 surface" or "IDirectDrawSurface7 *surface". I've seen them both used in examples and in my own tests I have used them both interchangeably. The only difference that I've seen was when using "LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7 surface", when taking a screenshot using print screen, it was pitch black.
