Spherical mapping and ATI driver performance.

Are there any known issues with performance/implementation of glTexGen function in GL_SPHERE_MAP mode when it comes to the ATI Radeon openGL drivers? I have a very generic render function,[not using any vendor-specific extensions or even any more advanced features] which i use to compile display lists for a simple 3d object viewer. Having recently switched the graphics card to Radeon 9ooo, i''ve discovered the performance is 4-6 _times_ worse than what i was getting on the same machine with GeForce 2mx card, whenever there''s any surfaces which make use of spherical mapping. :o Just wondering what might be causing this, and if there''s any way to fix the problem...
