Texture Mapping a Quadratic

I want to map a texture onto a gluSphere and I''m new to texture mapping. I only want the texture to appear on part of the sphere. Can I do this? How? Here is an example of what I want to do: If I have a texture of the number 8, and I want to map it onto a gluSphere (making the 8 ball). I want to map it onto a certain place on the sphere, and I don''t want it to repeat, and I don''t want it to clamp the last pixel colors and draw them the rest of the way around the sphere. Can I some how specify ranges for the s and t texture coordinates? Any help appreciated, butter

Dunno if it can be done with gluSphere.
Never tried it myself....

what would be easier is to make a texture that will wrap around the whole sphere....

maybe you could translate the texture using the texture matrix... you can read more about that somewhere else.
