DDraw7 Particle Systems

In Andrew Lamothe''s book his particle system is done by locking the surface and changing the pixel data manually. Is this the best way to do it? Would it be easier to just blit a .bmp of a pixel wherever I needed? Is this viable performance wise?

Do a speed test, but for single pixels then a blit would be way slower. Think about it, just to set up a blit you have to do many statements but actually setting a pixel is just one single equals statement. Even if you check for different surface formats and work out different x/y memory addresses my bet is it would still be quite a lot faster than a blit. For 2x2 or larger particles though you''ll have to do some tests.
