Iso Engine with height question...
I''m working on implenting Roller Coaster Tycoon style engine as far as map orientation and heights go. The thing is a i needa tile set to use that includes all the pieces required to make propers slopes etc.
Does anyone have any idea where I could find a base set to work with?
Just do a few minutes of thinking of the combinations you need. Besides, some isometric tilesets are very different from others. For comparison, look at the "1-point-high 3-points-low" sloped tiles in RollerCoaster Tycoon, and compare them to those in SimCity 2000. SimCity just cut the edges, making bare cliff slopes. The Tycoon games used an actual slope. Sometimes one is better than the other... sometimes not.
In essence you need 1 version of "Flat", and 4 versions of each "1-high 3-low", "2-high 2-low", "3-high 1-low" to get simple, 1-tile terrain. For more variety, you''ll need standard transition tiles for "Flat", but only "low transitioning to high" versions for all sloped tiles and "cross-slope transition" versions for "2-high 2-low" slopes. At most.
If you want a copy of my isometric template, send me an email, to (tiogshi@hotmail.com). I''ll send it back (ZIP''ed 16-color BMP)

Have you sorted out how you are going to do the mouse to tile problem? I am assuming that you will be using 2D images here.

Not yet. I know how I''d do it with a flat iso map.. Gonna have to think out how to do it with height involved.
I know there is an article on how to do this, I know as I wrote it, but I have not seen it appear on Gamedev''s list of articles.
The only thing I can think that''s stopping this is the article readers are taking some time to read and re-format the article.

Steven, I am about to start a 2D iso engine with height as well, and I''m not sure how to figure out the mouse to tile problem either. Your article sounds great, and since we all know how slow game dev is at updating the articles , could you please email it to me? My email address is willoconnor@rogers.com, thanks!
I''ll e-mail you the article and a sample program when I get home tonight. I appologise for the total lack of comments in my code, but I wrote that test app to be a pure test for my ideas, it worked and I did not comment it. When I get time I''ll comment it and setup a web page for it somewhere.

Sweet, I''m looking forward to it .
The lack of comments doesn''t bother me, I''ll figure the code out!
