D3D8 drawing over windows chat dialog

Hi I am working on a 3D multiplayer game. I am currently trying to use a standard windows dialog for inputting chat messages. However, in fullscreen mode, D3D apparently draws over the box. I can still select the edit box and type in the message, but you can''t see box. In the FullScreenDialog DDraw demo, it uses a clipper to avoid this. Is there anything like that I can do in D3D?
