are bitmap font these kind of fonts where you load a bitmap and put the chars into display lists (opengl) if these ARE bitmap fonts it''s the fastest way.

Depends how you want your interface to look, if you only need a few different fonts/sizes and you dont mind them looking smaller at higher resolutions (or your game only uses one resolution) they are no problem. The upside is that they are platform-independant, which is less easy for true type fonts.
