Suppose I am working on a high end system (Radeon 9800). Would rendering a face with 6 textures (in one pass) take more time then rendering it with 1 texture?

It does, I use only 2 texture units (to draw a clouds shadows over the land/objects)and there is a drop in speed on all the cards my users have (the drop in speed varies from 20% to 60%, depending on other things).
And it is normal to happen, since the final texture is composed by all the texture units, so there is some additional work for the video card.

- The multi-texture itself isn''t a problem, most chips can do that at effectively zero cost.

- But the texel cache misses will hurt, even if it''s the same map but with different sampling offsets.

but it''s still a LOT faster than rendering the same thing 6 times
