frames per second

hey i seem to get really bad frames, for rendering around 5000 polys on the map, i get about 24 frames per second on a geforce 3 with athlon 950, 300mb of ram all i currently do is display some terrain, that has been chopped up it uses index and vertex buffers and is only triangle list, a friend i know said if i made this a triangle strip would get better frames, but still, shouldnt i be getting more than 24 frames per second rendering 5000 polys :? could i be doing something wrong?

I remember a bug on certain gfx chipsets that if you did not have the right drivers installed your AGP apeture was set to small, that really used to kill performance. There used to be a tool on Nividia''s website for checking the apeture size...
