What tools do I need for animation?

I need some inverse kinematic or mesh animations but I don''t know how to make them. What tools can make and export these? I''m a new''b to animation but really good at modeling... Can someone tell me how to do this and what tools will do it?

Maya and Softimage should both have these tools. Joints and bones and such under the animation menu in Maya. Then after you ''rig'' your character (set the bones and joints and snap them to the mesh) you just animate the key frames on a timeline saving the positions of the model. Rewind and hit play, Maya does all the in-betweening for you. I''m not so familiar with Softimage but I believe it can do the same (from what I hear it''s better for animating)
