Blending more than 2 textures in multipass

Hello, I am trying to figure out how to use blend more than 2 textures onto a surface... Right now, I just use the specular color as the alpha of one texture and the diffuse as the alpha of another. There arn''t any other places to store my alpha values, so where can I put them? I have thought that I could probobly use vertex shaders to do this by say using the green component of diffuse for one texture, the red for another, the blue for another and the alpha for another and get 4 textures blended, but I''m not really sure.
