Mouse in World Coordinates?

Is there an easy way to translate screen coordinates (or, similarly, back buffer coordinates) into world coordinates? That is, when displaying the mouse cursor (and tracking its position using DirectInput), how can you determine which object was clicked on? My particular project has a plane parallel to the xy plane, and the camera is limited to rotations around the x-axis (looking down z), and I''d like to have (at minimum) the location on the plane beneath the mouse cursor.
