I am messing with perlin noise and i am having trouble coming up with a fast function to generate the noise. I want it to take two floating point arguments (of any value) and return a (deterministic) value between -1 and 1. It does not have to be perfectly random, as long as there are no obvious patterns in the output. Any ideas? Marijn

You could use a precalculated table for sin.

I assume you are looking for something like this http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/noise/.
Perlin noise is reasonably fast. If you only need a fixed level of detail, you can always pre-render it to texture.
