There are a bunch of different types of terrain. The first I'll let you in on is probably the most common, and its generating terrain from heightmaps. Good tutorials on that can be found here, here and here (but they are all in OpenGL, I"m sure if your affluent in graphics programing you could port the concepts over to whatever API you're using).

The other kind of terrain is procedural, and that's made by your program, and not a premade heightmap. Good resources on this can be found here. There is also bezier terrain and voxel terrain, but those are a little advanced, and I haven't look into them too much.

EDIT: (fixed link) Completely forgot about terrain optimization. Here we go:
When you start creating big landscapes, and want it to look good and run fast at the same time, you're going to need some kind of terrain optimization technique. Besides using the regular graphics API optimizations (like vertex arrays in OGL), you might have to look into CLOD (which I definitely do not recommend, search google if you feel like it), or GeoMipMapping. GeoMipMapping is the best and newest technique out there and I would argue easiest way to optimize your terrain. Just read this article and the rest should come easy!

Hope that helps!

Iterated terrain rocks!I''m almost 100% sure that i''ll use circle algorithm for my engine.10x a lot!

No problem, glad to help. Once you get your terrain up and running, check out this thread to get you started on a very cool way to texture your terrain. I''m attempting to do this right now myself (its really worth looking into). Good luck on your terrain!
