2D in openGL?

Im slowly picking up on the game programing thing through C++ and was wondering if I should use SDL for 2D graphics, or should I just use openGL? I know openGL can do 2D, but would it be a good API for 100% 2d based projects? I will eventually use openGL for 3D only, but I wanted to do some cool 2D stuff first.

Your answer would depend your development needs.

For most stuff, SDL if fine. If you plan on using lots of alpha blending, then go with OpenGL as it provides hardware accelerated functions for this. Most cards don''t have 2d alpha hardware support.

Even if you decide to use OpenGL for graphics, it would still behove you to learn SDL so that you can use it for everything else: windows, input, sound, etc.
