API and Game Idea
Hey guys, Ok I dont know what API can someone explain and where do i get information about it (Web site Please) also, im going to have to build a final project in VB 6.0 for May any good ideas, just something simple BUT Brillant! i know i know you arnt ganna give me a brillant idea if it is so brillant i just want something that will impress the class mates!!! Thanks for the help!
A graphic API (I supose that''s what you''re talking about) is basically a set of dunctions that allows the programmer to directly access the hardware... But if its due in May, don''t even bother learning one (for that project anyway).
Cool project I''ve made in VB in one month as my first project
A labyrinth game where you could load levels from text files and that had a kind of key system with tiles which caused a kind of Jeoparedy question. (People went mad with the typos in answers tough)

Actually, a graphical API provides a layer of abstraction between the programmer and the hardware, so that the programmer doesn''t have to access the hardware directly.
well, by directly, i meant not going trough GDI or that stuff. Its abstracted, but you access it as directly as it get
You''re right about GDI, but I maintain my point, main graphical APIs like DirectX and OpenGL is used to access the hardware in the most direct way. DirectX was actually purchased by microsoft to get game programmer to windows os, since windows did not permit the game programmers to get as "close to the metal" as they wanted. That is the purpose of those API.
You access hardware directly (or almost) the abstraction is there so you donthave to care WHAT TYPe of hardware you''re accessing

DirectX and OpenGL are only a narrow subsection of graphics APIs, and many (such as the GDI) keep you as far from the hardware as possible.
Even DirectX and OpenGL insulate you greatly from the hardware anyway; if you want to access hardware directly, write some drivers.
Hehe, I'm sorry, I was just feeling pointlessly argumentative. I'll stop being annoying now.
