River Erosion Algorithm

Anyone know some good sources for river erosion algorithms/theory. I am thinking to create a basic hill from a sine wave and then have an algorithm to cut the valleys and rivers. I have some ideas, which are pretty processor intensive, but was not wanting to re-invite the wheel if smarter brains than mine have already come up with good algorithms to do this. Thanks Rael

One algorithm that comes to mind is an inverted tree calculation, applied to a minus operator over the meshes.
