virtual member functions and plugins

Hi everybody. Why do I have to make my public member functions of my derived classes virtual if I want to use them in any plugins i write for my engine? If i don''t make them virtual, and try calling them from my plugin, then I get a linker error (unresolved). Just wanted to know the technical reason for this. Cheers. Jim
