Transparency colors with IDirect3Dsurface8

Hi... ''ve got a big issue with the IDirect3DSurface8 interface. When I try to display a bitmap with an alpha value that matches with its background color the background color actually disappears but it''s replaced witha black background instead of being transparent so that the BG picture can appear. How can I specify that the Bitmap background must be transparent?? However I noticed that could be done easily with textures, but I assume I mustn''t use a texture to perform an animation : now, I''m kinda stumped. Please help me !! Thanks to all !
