OpenGL How to load and display in OpenGL an icon created inside VC++

I have a collection of icons that I use in a tree control to display the hierarchy of my scene. The problem is that now I want to access these icons from OpenGL and display them in my scene too as images. Is there an easy way to do this or do I have to convert these icons manually to TGA format for instance? Thanks
