3D programming

Hello, I''m a newbie to game development and interested in 3D software engines. I know C quite well I think and have managed to create a small object renderer using DirectDraw supporting vertex shading. A newer version also got support for handling more than one object but used bubble sort to handle the painter''s algorithm =) The problem here is that I''m not sure at what level I am. To make this first renderer took me quite some time. The line drawing routines(bresenham) was one of the nightmares that at times could make the rendering look really strange(floating point conversation errors)! After a few days of code-staring I solved it however. I guess what made it take so much time was all the things you had to figure out how they worked such as line drawing, rotation etc. Does anyone have any suggestion on what I could do now? Also is there any nice resources for software 3D? I have looked around this site but I''m still not certain on what suits me most.
