repeated collisions

i have spheres colliding with AABBs when a sphere collides with an AABB, it either: - is on top of the AABB and stays put - is on an edge of the AABB and slides off - or is on the ground, and slides around the sides of the AABB - etc .. this all works fine .. the problem is that after the sphere has been displaced by an AABB, the system still registers collisions between the two. i assume this is from some errors due to my use of floating points (i.e. D3DXVECTOR3) i''ve tried adding some constant SEPERATOR value to all collisions displacements, but that results in a kind of "jittery" effect when the sphere moves around corners & such .. any suggestions on how to make sure that collision displacements will not result in subsequent collisions, given that the displaced object will remain stationary after being displaced?
