# Which side of a sloped line?

## Recommended Posts

Is there a quick way to figure out what side of a sloped line a point is? I can''t recall anything off the top of my head of an easy way to do it other than taking the vertical and honizontal of the point then get the points of intersection with the soped line then test the sides of that, seem to me there might be a simpler way...is there?

If you have the equation for the line: y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.

You can plug your point's x value in and see if its y value is less than (lies under the line) or greater than (above the line) the corresponding y value of the line at that point. If it is exactly equal, the point lies on the line.
