for free, try massiva, bidule, buzz, audiomulch, or that computer music mag muzys and fome freeware vst/vsti.. ''up to speed.''
I have to chime in with wiggly-worm and promote Reason. Everybody making music on the computer should check it out, IMHO. I''ve tried every piece of music software I could get my hands on (trackers, software synth/midi and recording stuff) and this is my favorite of all of them.
Cakewalk Guitar Tracks through Pro 9- i think all the cakewalk packages are great and decently priced. I''ve use alot of different software and I would choose any Cakewalk product. I''ve used it to record punk bands, orchestral pieces, vocalists, and accoustic guitar...too bad I sold my Mackie or I might be working at electric lady land by now.
