DVD playback

I don't realy expect anyone to know the answer but its worth a shot. I've just upgraded to Mandrake 9.1 in the last week and while overall I'm happy with the new version(glad to see HD DMA enabled on install ) but I'm having some growing pains. I've been using ogle for awhile now for DVDs. To my knowledge it is still the only realy player to do menus and play encrypted dvds. Unfortunatly after install, playback using it has become jerky. I've done all the suggested FAQ fixes and none fixed or realy fit my problem. The only thing It says different is that there is no accelerated IMDCT transform found. I have no idea what that is and cant find any info on it. It may be a program only term but thought if I was real lucky may be someone would know what it ment. Other wise is there anything else out there worth using? I had Xine decripting DVDs long ago but they seam to be on a mission to keep that from happening. Which makes it usful for not much but porn. Without menus much of my stuff is hard to impossible to watch. I have many boxsets that realy need menus. I could try installing 8.1 then upgrading instead of a clean install but that probably won't work. If I just downgraded the I'm out 3D because my vid card is too new and after a week of trying I came to the conclusion that it would never run 3D which was the reason for the whole upgrade in the first place. Without dvd I loose the only reason I have to run linux. Cant web surf because of the win modem thing. Games are rare, so there is not much left. I like it but its always been such a close but not good enough situation. Something is always going wrong. [edited by - Goober King on May 3, 2003 3:49:14 PM]

DCT is Discrete Cosine Transform, IDCT is the Inverse... it''s related to the Fourier transform (expect the DCT uses cos not e ), and is at the heart of what makes mpeg possible.

IMDCT stands for Inverse Modified Discrete Cosine Transform.
I''d guess that the IMDCT is an approximation of IDCT that works good enough for playback and is faster than a perfect IDCT.

This sounds like your problem
And so does this

Here''s someone claiming the development of IMDCT It seems not to be a short-cut, but a computationally efficient decomposing of the IDCT matrix.

Ah, Linux, the perfect operating system for a grandmother! It will surely replace Windows in easy of use any minute now!

The hardware accelerated part is the key -- it''s usually provided by your graphics card, or by an add-in card such as a Hollywood (back in the days).

Maybe you were using special graphics drivers before, and they got wiped when you upgraded?

IMDCT is a red herring. Most computers these days are perfectly capable of decoding MPEG at full speed without the aid of a decoder card (which''ll do the IDCT/IMDCT for you). I think your problem is elsewhere.

How appropriate. You fight like a cow.
Well thanks for the heads up. I still have no idea what to do about it. Tried reinstalling 8.1 and 8.2 and then upgrading but the upgrades would not take. Errored on boot. Oh well. I have no idea what to do with the matrix thingy MKH linked to and am sure to have nightmares. I wasn''t ment to understand such things. If I was I would just write my own DVD software. Its funny. Used to be I had to use linux for DVDs. It was choppy under windows. Then I got a new card and it fixed the problem and everything was happy in win land and linux world. Then the evil fixer uper came(me) and thought he could remake linux world into an even better place and reinstalled version 8.2. Suddenly all was not well. 3D no longer worked for the new video card did not like the install fairy. Then he installed 9.1 and the video card was happy. Alas king ogle could not cope with the brave new world and his kingdom fell apart.

Is DMA enabled for your DVD drive?

I myself have a problem with my particular setup and kernel 2.4.20 where it can't use DMA for my DVD drive properly on my VIA motherboad. Without DMA playback is kinda choppy - obviously not full speed. I'm about to try 2.4.21rc1 to see if that fixes anything.

BTW, I have use xine and love it - it has DVD menu support and can play encrypted discs, you just need to find a particular DVD reading package (libdvdcss or something like that - have a google).

Good luck,
Brendon

The following statement is true. The previous statement is false.

Xine works fine so I''m doubting is DMA problmes. One of the FAQs delt with the issue. I found some unoffical xine rpms that say they do menus and encription so toss one back and cross your fingers. I''ll keep trying until I get it right. Sooner or later I always do. I just found out madrake ships with tones of stuff it doesn''t install by default. A coulple more DVD players were in there, of corse lacking encription decoding. That whole thing pisses me off. I payed for my DVDs and drive and everything else but the DVD gods found a nice scam in css encripion and I have to pay for it. My ass hurts. I think I just got screwed.

Hah it works. Funny thing is ogle works now too! I reinstalled everything form scratch and think Im using a differnt css decription version so I'm not sure what fixed it and I don't care. Just going to be happy and not change anything for once. Now I have two players with menus. So good came out of this.
