How do programs know that they have previously been installed? This happens with shareware all the time, I wan''t to do something similar. Can anyone shed some light on this?

you can use this. It will return the default value if the key isn''t present.

UINT GetProfileInt(
LPCTSTR lpAppName, // section name
LPCTSTR lpKeyName, // key name
INT nDefault // default value if key name not found
