The reason MP3 is included in direct show is fairly simple. MP3 is a variation of the MPEG video format. And as such it''s not just raw music data so a CODEC must be used to decode the music from the MP3. DirectAudio and DirectSound don''t really have support for CODEC''s off hand, however because direct show was designed for video files which have used CODEC''s for years it was the most logical choice to use DirectShow to play MP3''s rather than DirectAudio or DirectSound.
