less vertices using index buffers

Hi all, I''ve noticed when setting up the vertex data for my quads in my terrain engine, the number of new vertices I need to do on the second row is only one as the quad shares the vertices from the other ones around it. Just wondering if there is a good way of generating these vertices for these quads ? At the moment I am drawing them down on graph paper and hard coding them into my code, trying to find a pattern so I can introduce a loop to do them! Kind regards, Steve
