Compressing game data?

I see this all the time in lots of the big games and it seems like the game uses diffenrn''t compression algorithims to hide its data such as models and pictures into one file fully compressed. I was wondering how exactly do they use this? By that I mean how do they load the files into there game when they are compressed? coder requires 0xf00d before continue().
