determining left or right?

ok, given a starting direction and a direction to another position. how would i go about figuring out whether i turn left or right? i thought dot-product originally but doesnt tell me which side just whether its behind me or not.. anyone got any ideas?
Dot the vector in question with either the normal of the plane formed by the up vector and the original vector or the cross product of the up vector and the original vector. The sign of the result will tell you.
