Also check 3dbuzz. Its the best resource on the net if you''re looking for free firstclass tutorials. There you can download hours of tutorials on 3ds max.

I think they use max 5 so there are a few small changes from max 4 but its no biggie. You need a fast connection to download it due the the size of the video tutorials. If you dont have it they send it to you for free. only shipping cost I think.

There you have both the basics of 3dmax and a little bit more advanced like building a character from scratch¨.
