takes more ram than it should..

I''ve made a game in ogl, and ofcourse it has to have some pictures. When I load my picture it takes more memory than it should. Let''s say I''ll have no picture, and the game takes about 5mb of ram.. and then I load a 3mb picture, and now the game takes around 15mb, eheee, why? Anyone experienced the same thing.. or is it just my graphic-code that is fucked up? I have looked for errors in the code without finding any.
