Tiles in a game world

There are quite a few resources out there. If you have the resources to pick up some books... several of the Andre Lamothe books teach various tile-based engines pretty well. There are also dozens of articles here on gamedev. Check out the articles section. I believe there is an entire section devoted to that topic.

Yup I''d check the articles and resource section here at GameDev.. there is a set of articles call Game Genesis that is just under Game Programming.. it will teach you everything from the ground up.. but if you don''t need the basics then you can jump to the section that deals with the maps and tiles..

I believe once you read that and maybe a few others that are there.. you''ll definitly see how a basic tile based game would work.. however isometric tiles would be harder to understand..
