What language and toolkit? (vb, .Net, tk, Qt, swing, etc.)

Toolbar is not a vanilla win32 api control (as EditBox and Listbox are).

If you are using .Net, then msdn has an answer.

vb.net:

ToolBar1.Buttons(1).Style = ToolBarButtonStyle.Separator

C++.net:
toolBar1->Buttons->Item[1]->Style =
ToolBarButtonStyle::Separator;
If you are using qt, then you use void QToolBar::addSeparator ()
