I''m actually working on a simple program that will make use of overlay surfaces. I''m used to work with DirectX9 but i couldn''t find a way to use the old fashions overlays since DirectDraw has vanished. So here the big question: must i go back to DirectX 7 (oh god, no more PixelFormat please), or is there a way to do this with DirectX9. I want to wake use of the overlays to draw simple animations on the desktop.

DDraw has dissapeared. You may use a DDraw7 interface to access overlays.
There may be two solutions, but never tried then.
a. When you create a D3DDevice, use the Main Windows hWnd instead of your window. (scary)

b. Create a transparent window and render there.

Luck!
