how can i find out what texture formats a card supports? im looking through the docs, specifically the section on device caps, but i can''t find anything about getting available texture formats...

IDirect3D*::CheckDeviceFormat

You maintain a list of all the formats your app is interested in and check whether each one is available using CheckDeviceFormat().

Take a look at the samples in the SDK for an example of that function being used to check whether formats are available.
