I''m preparing to start learning DirectX and I currently have the Dev-C++ compiler. I''ve heard that that compiler isn''t good at working with DirectX. Do you know any free compilers that are good for DirectX?

Any C++ compiler can handle DirectX. You just need to make sure you download the appropriate library files for the compiler.

The library files provided by Microsoft for DX are designed to work with their compiler. Search the net to find the library files that work with MingW ( the compiler used by Dev C++).

The Microsoft header file should work fine.

If you have the latest release of Dev-C++ it comes with a package manager (in the tools menu). Just search for updates, and there is a DirectX 9 package for Dev-C++. It should work (if not, you can always port over the libraries yourself using reimp, there is an article somewhere on gamedev.net explaining how to do that).
